Top Ten Date-Producing Countries, 2001

                         

I am going to write about the top countries which were producing dates and it’s in 2001 as shown in this bar chart.

We can see that only Egypt and Iran exceeded the 800,000 tonnes and only Egypt produced over  1,000,000 .In another direction we see that Libya had the lowest production and it is less than 200,000 tonnes. The third country after Egypt and Iran is the UAE and it is producing over 750,000 tonnes and Saudi Arabia is the fourth country. Pakistan is near to Iraq’s production as the fifth country.

Algeria produced over 300,000 tonnes and it came as the sixth one. After Algeria is Oman which was producing over 200,000 tonnes and less than 250,000 tonnes and it came as the seventh country. In the end Sudan came before Libya and it produced over than 150,000 tonnes.

From that record we can see the big gap between the greatest and the lowest date production which means that 6 countries produced more than half a million tonnes and two countries produced less than 200,000 tonnes.

Valentine's Day Gifts

I am going to write about the types of gifts that men and women in the USA buy for each other on Valentine’s Day.

From these graphs we can see that cards, candy and flowers are coming at the top of the list. Then 10% of men and 9% of women bought jewelry. The perfume/cologne came as the sixth choice.

Spa/personal was 6% and 1% for men and women respectively.

The lingerie was the last choice for both of them.

In general it was great to find that these different choices were because of the money availability of different people.    

UK budget in 1996

The UK government gave each section a budget which was £315 billion in 1996 and which it is shown in the given pie-chart.

Social security was the highest category and it was £100 billion. The transport gets £9 billion which mean that it was the lowest category.

Health and personal social services was £53 billion

 and education got £38 billion.In that year defence got £22 billion. Debt interest was £25 billion and other expenditure was £23 billion. Industry, agriculture and employment had £13 billion only in this high budget .Law and order got £17 billion.

Finally, different amounts of budget were given to each section to show some improvement and meet the need of the UK residents.      

A journey from Brunei to Sarawak

Thirty years ago, Hedley, with his wife Mary and daughter Katie, visited the Niah caves in Sarawak, East Malaysia. They traveled by car, boat and ferry.

They set off from Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei and drove to the border with Sarawak. They crossed two large rives by ferry, stopped In Miri for lunch and then continued to Niah, a small river township. Thin they hired a small boat and sailed upriver to a government rest house, where they spent the night. They ate with the small group of scientists who lived in the rest house and shared the cold drinks they had brought with them in a cool box. It was a remote spot, deep in the jungle. They slept in bunk beds with no airconditioning. It was a novel experience.

The next morning, they walked along a jungle path for half an hour until they reached the Niah caves. Inside the caves, which were very high, they saw men who climbed up tall bamboo poles. The men wore lights on their hats because it was so dark. At the top of the poles they scraped off birds’ nests from the roof of the caves. The nests were collected by their mates on the cave floor and packed into sacks. These nests were later sold and made into bird’s nest soup, a Chinese delicacy.

That afternoon, they said goodbye to their new-found friends in the rest house and set off on the long drive home. It was quite an adventure and one they would never forget.

A journey from Brunei to Sarawak

Hedley, with his wife and daughter went to the Niah caves in Sarawak They are located on the east of Malaysia. They traveled by many ways and saw a lot of things.

They story started from Bandar Seri Begawan, and they drove to the border with Sarawak. They crossed Beleit River by ferry, so they took the lunch in Miri then moved to Niah, a small township. They saw a boy wearing pajamas, and then they hired a small boat and sailed to a government rest house, where they stayed the night. They ate with a group of scientists and shared the drinks with them. It was dark deep in the jungle and they slept without air conditioner.

On the second day morning they walked a half an hour in the jungle until they reached the Niah caves. It was bad, smelly and dark with a lot of birds and bats but inside the cave they saw people climbing the bamboo poles and wearing helmets with a light; then they scraped off birds’ nests from the roof and packed them into sacks. This nest is used as soup for the Chinese.

Finally they said goodbye to their new friends in the rest house and went on the long drive home; it was an adventure, a new experience and an unforgettable time.

Compare and contrast

There are a lot of similarities and differences between the life now and in the past. My essay is about comparing and contrasting the life in the UAE now and 40 years ago.

There are many similarities. Firstly the weather is still hot and humid the same as in the past and many people are trying to survive and to feel good. Secondly the religion is Islam and has never changed. After that the traditional dress is almost the same as dishdasha and guttra and it helps them a lot to reflect the sun and to keep the heat away. Finally football is still the favorite sport for most of the people.

There are so many differences. Firstly the population has tripled in the past 40 years. Second they have modern transportation such as trains and fast cars. After that, the buildings have become bigger and taller than the old buildings. Finally the roads are wider and much longer and made of asphalt.

Some people like the old life and the others love the modern life but I prefer the modern life because it makes my life easy, busy and with the latest technology.
